Giles woke up at the sound of his alarm clock and groaned.
He should not feel this bone‑deep weariness after a good night’s sleep. Rubbing his bleary eyes, he sat up, exhaled, put his glasses on, and stood.
On the way to the bathroom something caught his attention: the tip of a sock was poking out of a drawer, so he took a couple of steps back and opened it.
He froze.
Every pair of socks had been deliberately mismatched. He picked up a pair—one burgundy, one navy—and inhaled sharply. “SPIKE!”
From the living room came a lazy drawl. “What?”

Giles reached him, seething. “What the hell is wrong with you?”
Spike stretched on the couch like a cat, hands behind his head. “Dunno, mate. That list is long, you’re gonna have to be more specific.”
“My socks,” Giles said through clenched teeth.
Spike grinned. “Oh, that. I was bored out of my bloody mind.”
Giles pinched the bridge of his nose. “You’re pushing your luck, Spike.”
“Luck?” he growled. “I’ve been reduced to a… toothless puppy, begging for the Slayer’s help.” He sulked. “And pranking her Watcher to pass the time.”
“Not for long,” mumbled Giles, leaving the room.
