Original: Poetry: Horror Show

Title: Horror Show
Fandom: No one is a fan of this
Rating: PG for Pretty Gruesome
Length: 80 words
Content notes: http://www.cbsnews.com/news/finding-hope-after-being-orphaned-by-ebola/
Author notes: (despite the poem's allusions, it wasn't SPN fic that I wrote.)
Summary: The young girl watches her mother die, nobody tries to comfort her.

I saw them on the news today.
orphaned, potentially deadly kids
No one wanted to touch.

I'd been wondering (not about this, so much,
though of course it's on everyone's minds.)
but over how to fill this challenge.

I wasn't in much of a mood
for ghosts and goblins, costumes and candy.
At first I wasn't sure why.

I'll have no trouble picturing 'haunted' anymore.
It's in these children's faces.
And in the reporter's voice.

God, the things they've seen.
Pain, and loss, and death
and then it all repeats, at a 50% rate.

Survivors in the harshest sense,
Will act as guardians now, of new families.
Once recovered, they're safe from re -infection.

That is where the horror is, not here.
Of course we must be careful,
But that should be nothing new.

Despite the fear-mongers,
We are in the not-so-hot zone.
There's more danger from the flu.

I thought about writing something silly and fun,
with characters I love from TV.
I've even got half of a story.

But fictional angels in trench-coats,
and ersatz demons in muscle cars
are no match for the truth of Ebola.
