Summary: Yun Weishan waits in the bride house.

The bride house is quiet, a winter forest when the starving wolf howls. The deer know that a misstep could mean death: the women glide smoothly through the courtyard, voices soft, darting glances at each shadow they pass. They have been caged, hunted, and one of their own slaughtered. They know they could be next.

Weishan finds it easy to sympathize. She is the viper in their midst, but her quick sharp teeth cannot protect her. The hooves of the herd can kill as fast as the wolves’ jaws. So she waits, silently, and ponders how to be a doe.
