“It’s the sheep,” Gareth said, letting the brightly coloured beetle go.

Joss shook his head. “Sheep? I thought we were looking for beetles.”

“My father’s notes record places to find different species, but I’m starting to see its not really about that. It’s the kind of place. The ecology. And sheep change that.”

“They surely do,” Joss agreed, failing to grasp the revelation that had Gareth so excited.

“It’s just - I’m starting to make my own sense of it, that’s all.”

“Well, there’s no surprise.” Joss looked at him fondly. “Your father was never half the marshman you are.”
