Stepping through the stargate, the four members of SG-1 stopped dead, squinting, and shielding their eyes against brilliant sunlight.

“Whoa, it’s…” Jack started.

“Bright,” Daniel finished for him, reaching for the sunglasses that clipped over his prescription lenses. “Guess the storm must’ve passed since we sent the MALP through.”

“Ya think?” Jack donned his own shades. “Don’t get sunshine like this in Colorado.”

“That’s because the sun here is twenty percent larger than ours, and according to this data, only a little over one hundred twenty-four million kilometres from the planet,” Carter explained, studying the data the MALP had collected since it was sent through ninety minutes earlier.

“It’s safe though, right? Radiation-wise, I mean.” The Colonel glanced back at her over his shoulder.

“Solar radiation is about what we’d experience in the desert, the ozone layer here appears intact, so most of the harmful UV wavelengths are being reflected, but I’d still advise keeping covered as much as possible to avoid sunburn. We’ll be here for the best part of a day, and we don’t want to go home extra crispy.”

“No we don’t,” Daniel agreed. “I still remember the last time I caught a bit too much sun.”

“You looked like a cooked lobster,” Jack said, smiling at the memory. “Bright red. And then you started peeling.”

“Yes, thank you, I don’t need a reminder.”

“Worst case of sunburn I’ve ever seen.”

“Which is why I carry sunscreen everywhere now.” Daniel hadn’t meant to sound quite so snippy, but Jack could be a bit annoying at times.

“Just because it’s winter back home doesn’t mean it will be everywhere we go.” Sam looked around her, having put her own sunglasses on. “Which way?”

Jack went into command mode. “Straight ahead; anything interesting is likely to be that way, otherwise the ‘gate would be facing in a different direction.”

“A reasonable assumption.” Daniel nodded.

“There appears to be a substantial body of water in that direction, a lake perhaps.” Teal’c had impressive eyesight, and apparently no need to wear sunglasses.

“Maybe it’s the ocean,” Daniel mused. “If this planet HAS oceans.”

“We’re not here to spend a day at the beach, Daniel.”

“I know that, but the shores of a lake, or an ocean, would be a good place to look for traces of past civilisations, or current settlements.”

“Fine, we’ll go take a look. But no sunbathing, okay?”

The End
