Title: Sense of Duty
Fandom: Trauma Team (2010 Wii Game)

Length: 594
Tags: Amnesia, mention of bioterrorism, male/female friendship. Happens pretty early in game
Characters: Maria Torres, CR-S01
Summary: CR-S01 doesn't know who he is. But he knows his duty.

There was a lot CR-S01 didn’t know. His brain wasn’t a sieve, but in his memories laid a gaping wound, nearly surgical in its precision.

He couldn’t remember anything prior to the disaster, but his body knew what it was meant to do and how to do it. Maybe that was why he had such a strong sense of duty. When the possibility had been dangled before him in his jail cell, when his jailer had offered him the possibility of performing surgeries in exchange for a potentially reduced sentence… He didn’t examine too closely what he would have had there been no prize at the end of this order. CR-S01 strongly suspected that he would have accepted to perform surgeries for nothing at all, only for the possibility of saving lives again.

“I know I was mad at you in the beginning.”

Dr Torres’s voice brought CR-S01 out of his focus on his hands (still pristine, still so agile despite the years of disuse). “Hm?”

He blinked at her, still unsure of where he stood with her. She was honest, so that at least was a point in her favour, but she was also unpredictable, and that lack of predictability made him uneasy.

“I think you’re a good guy,” Dr Torres said, with a nonchalant pause and a bright grin directed at him.

“I’m not,” CR-S01 denied. He closed his hands; hands that had apparently caused so much death in that bioterrorist attack he couldn’t remember. Then he opened them, letting them help the surgical aides in clearing the room and putting it back together. Dr Torres didn’t say anything, which was unlike her and CR-S01 felt prompted to clarify.

“A good person. I’m not.” He shook his head. “I’m just doing what I was meant to do. What I should do.”

“Ahhhh-“

An explosive sigh, and when CR-S01 looked in Dr Torres’s direction, he saw her shaking her head at him. “See, this is why I can’t believe I ever thought you killed all those people in that bioterrorist attack. You’re too much of a goody-two-shoes.”

CR-S01 felt his mouth twist, though he didn’t know what expression he was making. “I was proven guilty in a court of law,” he pointed out.

“Yeah, when the only suspect is amnesiac and everyone else is dead that’s easy to prove.” Dr Torres scoffed. “The evidence was all circumstantial, wasn’t it? They still don’t even know what kind of bioagent it was.”

CR-S01 didn’t really know. He’d never looked for the details of his trial, knowing it wouldn’t bring him any solace and only remind him of what he’d forgotten he’d lost. But sometimes he wondered. He had such a strong sense of duty and conviction in what he was meant to do: healing people through surgery. Could he have had such a strong sense of duty and conviction to another cause before? One that could’ve led him to cause so much death?

He looked at Dr Torres, whose sharp green eyes were daring him to protest. His mouth relaxed into an amused smile. “I’m sure you’re right,” he agreed, though he couldn’t quite believe it.

“Of course I am!” she laughed. “You’re too stuck in that pretty little head of yours, you know? Sometimes it really is better-”

CR-S01 let the voice that was quickly becoming familiar to him wash over him, knowing Dr Torres would catch his attention again should she wish to regain it. It was becoming familiar, that company. And CR-S01 wondered how long he would be allowed to keep it.
