Jiashang can still feel the rage searing at the edges of his mind. Waking, sleeping, every moment. He was surprised it didn’t burst from his skin when Shizhen asked him if something was wrong; he fled Beijing as if all of hell’s demons were chasing him. But it was only one demon, buried inside his bones. His father’s legacy.

He could burn the photograph. Kill anyone who knows. Eradicate this secret from the world to keep it safe, safe, safe.

But he knows: this is what his father felt, when he tried to murder Shizhen.

Author's note on the theme: Jiashang's decision here was clearly the choice between tragedy and redemption, though he had no way of knowing it. So he would have been very, very sorry if he'd chosen the other way.
