Shizhen sagged against the car, heart pounding. Her fingers spasmed, wire cutters tumbling to the gravel road. It took a moment to realize the roaring in her ears was Jiashang calling her name.

She knew this feeling, the terror that came after an emergency. She’d been able to keep calm while Jiashang talked her through disarming the bomb. Now that it was done, she was falling apart.

Warm arms came around her, Jiashang pulling her close as she began to sob. He murmured over and over that she was safe -- a lie, but she wanted so badly to believe it.
