Daniel’s a geek, always has been and always will be, it’s hardwired into his brain. Science, research, exploration, discovery, that’s what fires him up, fuels his endless enthusiasm day after day. The smaller the detail, the more it fascinates him, and that’s never NOT going to leave Jack baffled. Daniel’s mind is an alien landscape, and yet… He’s changed so much since they first met that in some respects, he’s almost unrecognisable as the skinny, sneezy, long-haired, bespectacled archaeologist Jack had unwillingly taken with him on the first Abydos mission.

It's not just that he’s cut his hair, started taking antihistamines, and switched to contacts. He’s bulked up physically, learned to handle weapons as well as anyone on the team, with the possible exception of Teal’c, and even follows orders these days, for the most part. He still goes his own way when he thinks, or rather knows, he’s right about something and Jack’s wrong, but he’s not military, so he can get away with a certain amount of insubordination. Not that Jack encourages it, but he tries not to come down on his wayward archaeologist like a ton of bricks too often. They have their disagreements, that’s never gonna change, but that’s what happens when two radically different perspectives collide.

He's more confident than he used to be, sure of himself and what he brings to the team, comfortable in the knowledge that despite what Jack sometimes tells him, his talents are seen as valuable. And on top of that, he’s developed into one hell of a diplomat, drafting treaties with the various races they encounter that satisfy both parties, even finding ways of negotiating with certain of the System Lords.

Jack might not say it often, not in so many words, but he’s proud of how far Daniel’s come over the last few years, especially since he’s done it without losing any of his essential Daniel-ness. His wit and sarcasm have sharpened, and he’s more than willing to stand up for his beliefs, but yeah, still a geek, just one who can hold his own in a fistfight or a firefight with equal skill. Gone are the days when Jack was forever having to rescue him from one scrape or another. Nowadays, sometimes Daniel’s the one doing the rescuing.

“Nice work.” Jack claps Daniel on the shoulder.

“Nice of you to notice.”

Jack smirks: oh yeah, he noticed.

The End
