Summary: They had to give credit where credit was due. Tommy played the long game.
Word Count:
Tommy couldn't have asked for a better wedding. It was in their backyard, and it was lowkey. They had been in fancy suits, but those were long gone for the ease of not having to worry about grass stains on them. Evan was on the ground between his legs, head resetting on his thigh as the adults had fun on the dance floor that was made up for them. They had taken their turns on there as much as they could. It was a small, intimate wedding.
Reaching out, Tommy threaded his fingers through Evan's hair. The important pictures were long done, so they both could relax and just enjoy the party thrown for them. It was the kind of party that Tommy had never thought he would have for his wedding, but Evan had been the one to suggest it.
The music cut out, and Hen stepped up to the middle of the dance floor.
"Okay, we have reached the part where everyone tries to make these two blush," Hen said.
There was no need for a microphone as the backyard wasn't big.
A person was recording the big stuff, so Tommy looked for him. He found the guy set up in the corner, ready to do what he needed for this part.
Everyone looked like they were chomping at the bit to get up on the dance floor and make comments. It started with everyone from Tommy's side since they were the ones who had to leave first from the party, given that they were all on shift in the morning.
"This is something that not everyone knows, and I was going to tell Buck this months ago, but I decided that if Tommy hadn't told him, well, I would save it for now," Jake said. He grinned at Miriam before turning his gaze to Tommy.
"What not a lot of people know is that Tommy hit on me," Jake said.
Evan laughed and sat up a little bit, his attention turning to Jake fully.
"That's how we met; I was at a gay bar with a friend who was a little shy about that kind of thing. I held up the bar all night, and the only person to come up and hit on me was Tommy. He laughed about me turning him down, and we ended up talking, which led to him setting me up on a blind date with the woman I married a year after that. I've tried since then to set up Tommy with people I thought he would click with, and he was a champ about just doing it because it was something that Miriam and I wanted. In the end, he found his own guy while flying into a hurricane, and despite the man being a ball of sunshine, he sucked in Tommy and made him love him. So to you, Evan, thank you. I was getting sick of setting him up on dates."
TOmmy laughed, and he kissed the top of Evan's head when he tipped his head back and laughed.
More people got up and gave horrible stories about the two of them. It was cute and embarrassing because most of them had never seen the light of day. There were stories that TOmmy had heard about Evan in passing. By the end, Evans's face was buried in Tommy's thigh, and he was asking with laughter.
Then Eddie stepped up.
"I clicked with Tommy right off the bat, and I had only done that with one person when he stopped being an asshole to me at work. I knew I would be friends with him for the rest of my life. I didn't realize he would like Buck better than me."
Evan sat up a little straighter, and he seemed to be ready for anything. Given the shit that Eddie knew that know one else probably knew, it wasn't like it wasn't a founded fear.
"I was a little apprehensive when Buck told me how the first date went, from his side and not just my side, where I was too much of an idiot to see what it was. My girlfriend at the time had a feeling, but she said nothing since neither BUck nor Tommy had said anything until later. It was the later part that's stuck with me as well."
"Oh no," Tommy said. He knew where this was going.
"Buck, I'm sorry to do this to you on your wedding day, but Tommy's been keeping a secret from you."
Evan laughed, and he turned his face to look at Tommy.
"Sorry," Tommy said. He reached out and pulled Evan into his lap because he knew exactly what secret Tommy had kept from Evan since just after their coffee date.
"We all know what Buck is like when he's all in. He's really all in. I think there was a joke made about ludicrous speed. So, I wasn't shocked when I found out that I invited Tommy to Maddie's wedding for their second date. Which went just fine for what it was given: him fighting a massive fire and all of us trying to find the groom to actually have a wedding."
The crowd laughed a little since the story had been told of that day.
"This was after the third or fourth date, which was in quick succession as Buck's wont to do. I asked Tommy if Buck had ever given him that beer that he owed him since it was something from when Buck had gone to Harbor for a tour to see Tommy more without actually understanding why he wanted to see him more. That came with a kiss in Buck's kitchen that removed his brain for a few minutes if the play-by-play from both of them can be believed."
Tommy was laughing because he could feel Evan's interest in Eddie's story.
"So I asked Tommy this, and he laughed while sipping at his beer. He looked me dead in the eye and said he had a plan never to let Buck buy him a beer until they married."
Evan went still on Tommy's lap, and he cocked his head to the side. It was his thinking pose. Tommy had to wonder how long he was going to be stuck like that, but Eddie seemed to be holding his story until Evan got it.
"You utter bastard..." Evan turned round to look at Tommy with a maniacal grin on his face. "You...how in the hell did you never let me buy you a beer for over a year?"
Tommy laughed, pulled Evan in, and pressed their foreheads together. "Because I always brought beer when I was coming to your place under the guise of finding a new one that I really liked that you needed to try, and when we were out at dinner, if there was beer, I always paid for it. You noticed at first cause you always talked about owing me a beer, but then you kind of stopped, and I nearly stopped, but I had already told Eddie that. I wouldn't end up a liar to your best friend."
"I love you so much," Evan said before he dove in for a kiss.
Tommy cupped the back of his head and kept him right there until Eddie cleared his throat.
"Sorry, Tommy. I had to. In all honesty, there is no one here who hasn't heard most of the stories I could tell about the two of you, but one was one that I knew no one had heard. You do play the long game, so I have to give credit where credit is due."
"When we go on this honeymoon, you are letting me buy you a beer. I've been a very lax partner in not paying for a beer at all during this entire relationship."
That made everyone laugh, and Tommy pulled him in for another kiss. He had already planned for it. He knew where they were going, and Evan could buy him all the beer they wanted.
