Coming up from the file room, where he’d been researching several unsolved cases similar to the one he and Dee were currently working, Ryo stopped dead in the middle of the foyer, blinking in the bright sunlight. When he’d gone downstairs a couple of hours ago, it had been raining, as it had been almost constantly for the last week or so. Now, somehow the sun had managed to break through the ever-present clouds.

He should have continued on his way upstairs to go over his notes with his partner, but instead, as if he had no control over his own body, his feet took him towards the precinct’s main doors, and out into the parking lot.

Everywhere was starting to steam as the warmth from the sun’s rays dried the concrete and evaporated rainwater from the puddles. Ryo tipped his head back and closed his eyes, practically basking in the unaccustomed brightness. Part of him wished he wasn’t at work today and could just stay outside. The weather had been so miserable lately, cold, wet, and dismal, that even a few minutes of sunshine felt like an undeserved blessing.

Opening his eyes again, he studied the sky, expanding patches of blue replacing the heavy, rain-laden clouds. Would the better weather last? He had no way of knowing. Chances were, by the time his shift ended it would be raining again, but there was nothing he could do about that.

Reluctantly he turned and headed back inside; he couldn’t stand out here all day, not when there were crimes to investigate. He wasn’t getting paid to sunbathe, no matter how good it felt. Still, perhaps the sunshine was a sign that summer was finally beginning, even if it was a month overdue. Everything looked brighter with a bit of sun.

The End
