“Didn’t we just clean under the furniture last week?” Ryo said, sounding puzzled.

“Yep.” Dee didn’t bother looking up from the evening paper.

“That’s what I thought. We didn’t do a very thorough job, looks like we missed a bit. There’s a dust bunny under the sideboard.” Ryo had only noticed because a loose button had just come off his shirt and he was trying to find it.

“Not a dust bunny,” Dee replied. “Kitten.”

Ryo frowned at the back of his partner’s head, then took another look under the sideboard. “Are you sure? Looks like a ball of fluff to me.”

“Not fluff,” Dee insisted, still not looking away from the paper. “Kitten.”

“Huh.” Ryo sat back on his heels. “That’s odd. I always thought kittens had ears, legs, and a tail. This is just round and fuzzy.”

“Still a kitten.”

“Well, if you say so. Why is there a kitten under the sideboard impersonating a dust bunny?”

“Found it.” Dee still refused to look at his lover, but Ryo thought his ears looked a bit pink, like he might be blushing, something that almost never happened.

“Where?”

“Dumpster, when I took the trash out.”

Ryo snorted. “People will throw anything out these days. Waste of a perfectly good kitten, if you ask me.” He stood up and headed for the door, putting his shoes on and reaching for his coat.

That got Dee’s attention. “Where’re you goin’?”

“Pet store, doofus.” Ryo smiled fondly at his lover. “If we have a kitten now, we’re going to need a few things, like kitten food, litter tray, dishes, a cat bed, toys… You’d better stay here and keep an eye on the furball, I’ll try not to be too long. Oh, and you’ll need to make an appointment at the vet. We should make sure it’s healthy, find out whether it’s a boy or a girl, get it vaccinated.”

“You mean we can keep it?” Dee tossed the paper aside and stood up.

“Of course. What did you think I’d say, that you had to toss it back where you found it?”

“Uh, I kinda didn’t think that far ahead.” Dee ran one hand through his hair, looking embarrassed. “Just… I couldn’t leave it in the trash.”

“Of course you couldn’t, living creatures shouldn’t be treated like they’re disposable.”

Dee relaxed, grinning. “Thanks, babe. Should’a known I could count on you.”
