Author notes: This takes place approximately 15 years after Season 4, and is a letter exchange between Malcolm and his sister Madeline (back on Earth). Malcolm and Jonathan have an established relationship. It is in the form of a two double drabbles.
Summary: Keeping it in the family.


Dear Malcolm,

I hope this message finds you safe and happy. I know you’re out of comm range for several months of your current mission. This isn’t urgent, but there is something I wanted ask you about.

Do you remember the Triumph Bonneville that you left with me all those years ago? I’m sure you do – who could ever forget the rant our father unleashed on you when you bought it. I’m still not quite sure if you got it specifically because you knew how he’d react, but I know you loved that bike.

Now there’s someone else who’d dearly love to ride it. Hard to believe that Breandan is old enough to drive already. I still remember the day you first met him, holding him like you were so afraid he’d break. But you’ve been a wonderful uncle to him and he asks about you often. I’d love for us to give him the Triumph on his next birthday, if you would be agreeable. I can tell him it’s a loan from you if you prefer, but something tells me you probably don’t have plans for it.

Let me know when you can. And give my love to Jonathan.

Dear Madeline,

We were just contacted by a relay station with several messages for the crew. It was a nice surprise to hear from you. I’m fine, as is Jonathan. We’ve run into some local politics out here, so it seems our mission will be a bit more extended than originally scheduled. I’m sure that will come as no surprise to you.

I’d nearly forgotten that you still have the Triumph. I never expected that you’d keep it for over thirty years when I dropped it off that day when I left for San Francisco and Starfleet. I said you were welcome to use it whenever you liked, though I knew you’d only ridden with me a few times.

I’m very happy to pass it along to Breandan, especially knowing he’s wanting to ride it! I’m not sure what’s left of it, but it sounds like you’ve provided good storage. It will probably need some work, but that’s part of the fun of owning a classic bike.

Please wish Breandan a very happy birthday! Maybe he’ll take his mom out for a ride sometimes!
