Summary: Mrs Hudson is not happy!

I have had enough of the rain. It has completely outstayed its welcome, like a door-to-door salesman whose foot is jammed in the door (although a suitably dropped poker generally takes care of that). It has done nothing but rain for the last week. And if Mr Holmes decides to protest that it’s only been six days, I shall remind him of the short shower that caught him out the day before the non-stop rain started.

It’s not just a wet consulting detective I have to deal with, and with all his wet clothing dripping everywhere, not to mention my missing umbrella. There’s Dr Watson too. I know he does his best, but when he returns from visiting a patient late at night, he’s not always as careful as he might be about where he shakes his coat. However, I do forgive him, and of the two, he is by far the more thoughtful.

That’s not to mention various members of Scotland Yard who come to speak to Mr Holmes and leave a trail of footprints up and down the stairs, made even worse by other policemen arriving to update those already here. Plus, the sodden clients, some of whom seem to think I have nothing better to do than dry their outer garments and then make a point of checking their pockets in case I’ve taken anything while doing so. At least Mr Holmes increases his fees for the ones who do that.

But I can’t stand here chatting, there’s the door again.

“You there, who have you come to see?” … “You’ve a message for Inspector Lestrade. Well, stay there. Do not move an inch further into my house. Annie will fetch the inspector, who can come down to you. Are you deaf? I said not to move!”
