“Does Mr Davidson treat you good?” Lizzie asked, picking up on the slight edge to Erica’s tone as they talked about their lives.

Taking a moment to give the older woman a convincing answer, Erica cleared her throat. “He does, that’s to say he did once.”

“Huh?” Lizzie realised that it was a sore point for the governor.

“It was a good marriage until I decided to follow the trail of dolly birds he’d loved and left all over Melbourne.”

Lizzie placed her hand on top of Erica’s. “Hurts but we still love ‘em anyways.”

“Yes, Lizzie, we certainly do.”
