Even as she and her friends had teased him about it, Buffy had felt sorry for Giles, getting stuck with running Sunnydale High’s annual talentless show. Right up until Principal Snyder had volunteered all three of them to enter. It was a nightmare, no, WORSE than a nightmare, because now they’d have to come up with an act, rehearse it, and perform it on stage in front of everyone, students and parents alike. As if Buffy didn’t already have more than enough going on in her life.

What was the point of it all anyway? To humiliate a bunch of teenagers in the guise of putting on a show and entertaining anyone foolish enough to buy a ticket? The whole audience would probably be cringing as much as most of the performers, yet they’d applaud after each act, probably out of relief.

“If I’d wanted to be on stage, I’d have joined the drama club,” Buffy grumbled. “I’m the Slayer, I don’t do entertainment.”

“It’s not entertainment, it’s torture,” Xander said. “Especially for the audience who have to sit through the whole thing, and pay for the privilege.”

“I can’t do it, I get stage fright,” Willow reminded her friends. “I’ll freeze up, or faint, and then everyone will laugh. There’s nothing entertaining about that!”

“Relax, Will, we’ll figure something out, but I vote we don’t tell our parents. The only thing worse than having to perform in the talent show would be having our families in the audience, watching.”
