“I can’t believe I got detention!” Buffy grumbled. “That’s an hour of my life I’m never getting back. It wasn’t even my fault! Not entirely. I mean, it’s not like I planned on blowing up the chem lab. It was an accident, and anyway, I only blew it up a little bit. You can hardly even see the scorch marks.”

“The bottles should’ve been labelled better,” Willow agreed, always staunch in her support of her friend. “And why did we get a substitute teacher for chemistry anyway?”

“Mr Hughes got eaten. Yet another fatality at Sunnydale High.”

“Right, but a substitute? He wasn’t even a good one! Some people just shouldn’t be allowed around dangerous chemicals.”

“Yeah, like me, apparently.” Buffy smiled sheepishly.

“Don’t talk like that! You can do chemistry, if teachers give you the correct instructions. It’s not your fault the guy they stuck us with didn’t know his left from his right. If he had, you wouldn’t have picked up the wrong bottle.”

“You know what? You’re absolutely right, Will. He should’ve given himself a detention, not me. I was blameless! Not that it changes anything. I lost a whole hour for no reason. He had me scrubbing the benches and cleaning up the mess, so I didn’t even get a head start on my homework. Suppose it could’ve been worse though. He might’ve made me write ‘I shall not blow up the chem lab’, five-hundred times.”

Willow nodded. “He seemed like the type to hand out that sort of punishment.”

“Substitute teachers suck. The last one wanted to mate with Xander and then bite his head off.”

“That’s true. But she wasn’t human.”

“Maybe this one isn’t either. He could be a demon! We should have Giles look into that. Maybe I’ll have to kill him!”
