Summary: Lucas is using the canal to escape from his pursuer



The canal boat pulled into the bank and Lucas North stepped on board.  Wordlessly the owner steered back towards the centre of the canal and continued his journey.  Lucas glanced back looking down the canal towards Sharpness, where he had come from.

By taking to the water Lucas had hoped that his pursuers would lose sight of him for just long enough that he be able to escape them.

They were approaching a bridge and he ducked down inside, not wanting to be seen by the bridge keeper.

The barriers were up, traffic could continue to drive across the bridge unhindered.

He was not surprised to see the vehicle he had believed had been following him cross the bridge and keep going, evidently assuming he was still ahead.

The barge glided underneath the bridge, low enough there was no need for the bridge to be swung.

They came out, into the sunshine, and Lucas looked towards Gloucester, where Adam would be waiting for him.
