“You can’t just start like that,” Sid says. “You have to say the thing.”

“Rituals are for hockey, not for this,” Geno says. He thinks it’s pretty telling that “rituals” is one of the first English words he learned after he got to Pittsburgh, because people kept trying to explain Sid to him.

“There’s always a right way to do everything,” Sid says. Geno looks at him mournfully for a few moments, and Sid sighs and says, “Okay, sometimes, for some things, there are a couple of right ways.”

Geno grins at the concession, and figures it’s only fair to give in on this in return, so he dutifully recites, “One, two, three, four…”

“I declare a thumb war!” Sid yells, and they’re on.
