ChatGPT works on Fan_Flashworks

  • Mar. 30th, 2023 at 2:53 PM
Hi everyone! Just wanted to let you know that we mods have conferred on the question of whether to allow ChatGPT works on [community profile] fan_flashworks, and we've concocted the following policy.

We don't consider AI output to be an original work by the user who created the prompt. Therefore, we will only allow AI-created content on [community profile] fan_flashworks if:
  1. the entry includes at least 3 AI-created works that are related or arranged in some manner by the poster (ie, similar to a picspam)

  2. and/or

  3. the poster has significantly edited/modified the AI-created content. (You're on the honour system for this.)

In both cases, please clearly note in the header that the work(s) is/are sourced from an AI. We will tag for "m: ai-generated fanwork" "filter: ai content" as well as other relevant tags.

Yay! Thank you for posting this!

Looking at the formatted post, I'd like to make very sure people see the "and/or" between number 1 and 2. Maybe put it on a separate line?

1.

and/or

2.

I very much appreciate the time you devote to this community, and that you spent on this policy. FFW has been an important lifeline for me over the years as fannish interests and socializing waxed and waned.

I agree that AI-generated works are not original. I'm disappointed by this policy. It still allows for such work to be included in the community. Considering the ethically-dubious methods of how the datasets are built, including scraping huge amounts of digital art and text without regard for creators' moral rights, work derived from them, whatever its level of curation, is not just unoriginal, but the antithesis of creation. I believe it has no place in a creative community.

I'm not trying to argue, just stating my disappointment before I leave.

Thank you again for all that you've done with FFW over the years.

similar to a picspam

I'm not terribly happy with the curated category that has absorbed the picspam tag. Even AI-created content gets a tag of its own? You've asked before you removed or combined fandom tags used once 7 years ago. Did I miss something? If this is about how frequently the medium has been posted, several tags have only been used a few times but have not yet been combined.

Edited to add: It's not that the change doesn't make sense. Maybe it does? But I wish you'd asked.

Hi, thanks for your comment! To explain our reasoning:

We try very hard to keep fandom tags specific so people can find things in their fandoms, which is why we keep as many of those as we can. We ask before putting them in categories because we don't always know what category something belongs in.

We view the media tags as secondary and consider them fair game for reorganisation. You're right that there are some that have only been used a few times. That's a good point, and we will probably have to rationalise those soon too. Unfortunately we're working within a 1500-tag constraint, and we're constantly nearing the upper limit and trying to make ourselves some elbow room. Everything is a work in progress.

But we know some people have strong feelings about AI content, so we wanted to be sure to give it its own tag so people can filter it out if they want to.

Does that make sense? :-)

It does make sense, and I understand the problem of so many tags and how those tags are a perpetual work in progress.
