Summary: Holmes and Watson decide where to take their holiday

We had satisfactorily concluded the case which had brought us to Rome and Holmes suggested we could prolong our time on the continent by taking a short holiday.  It seemed a good idea to me, and Holmes accordingly prepared a telegram for Mrs Hudson to let her know our change of plans. 

Fortunately, I intercepted it before the boy could collect it, and amended it, so that instead of: BACK LATER HOLMES, it now read ALL WELL STOP TAKING HOLIDAY STOP WILL TELEGRAPH AGAIN BEFORE RETURN WATSON.

We discussed various possible areas to explore.  We both instantly dismissed the area of France between Nice and Biarritz, which, although pretty, would have too many tourists and Holmes had no wish of being recognised when all he desired was to relax.  I suggested the Black Forest in Germany, where I understood there were many charming walks which could be undertaken.  Holmes was in favour of making a detour and going to Greece but was forced to agree we would find we were spending most of our time travelling.

In the end we agreed on the lakes of northern Italy.  It would not take long for us to reach them, and they would give us all we sought: the opportunity for numerous walks in beautiful countryside and on the days when we were not feeling energetic, we could simply enjoy the view.

The one place neither of us even considered was Switzerland.  Although the scenery is magnificent, it holds too many bad memories for both of us, and we will not be returning.
