Summary: She reached out to catch the insect.
Na Bori doesn’t quite understand what’s going on. How had her morning at school gone from quiet and boring to the world suddenly ending out of nowhere? She watched as her fellow students turned from docile as they were supposed to be listening to their instructor start the lesson shifting to letting out frightened shouts and her friend, Lee Jihye, turning into a killer.
Horror filled her body as Na Bori watched as wide-crazed eyes slowly turned toward her as if suddenly remembering that she was lingering nearby. Her dearest friend-turned-murderer dropped the body she’d been choking just a moment before registering her presence to take a step towards her. Shoes squeaked across the bloody floor as Lee Jihye moved slowly towards her like a predator animal on the hunt before getting ready to lunge at her, and Na Bori closed her eyes tightly as she waited for warm hands to close around her neck.
Instead, to Na Bori’s terrified confusion, she hears the sound of another human body tripping on tacky floor panels where the blood has dried and a thud of Lee Jihye hitting the ground with a soft gasp. A breeze coming through the open window ruffled Na Bori’s hair as she opened her eyes, and she smelled the heady scent of smoke from the world outside as she met the familiar clear eyes of her friend, so full of startled surprise as she seemed to wait for Na Bori to do something.
The silent question of 'will she kill me?' hung between them as they stared at each other. Na Bori took a step forward, watching as Lee Jihye barely suppressed a flinch at her movement.
’Why would she flinch when she so easily killed someone else before?’ Na Bori wondered silently before thinking grimly to herself. ’It is also possible that she's doing it to make me lower my guard.’
A fluttering movement near the open window catches her attention. Na Bori finds herself momentarily distracted from the deadly situation as a butterfly flutters around the room while an idea and a question of how to save herself journey through her mind. She feels the weight of Lee Jihye’s attention on her as she releases air from within her body and reaches out toward the tiny insect.
Would it be enough? Would it count for the odd quest world they now found themselves in? Butterflies were known to have multiple eggs within their lifetime, but she had no idea if it would count towards an imaginary kill count.
The butterfly dies quietly with a soft crunch in her hand. The light of the little bug’s life has gone away so that she would be able to fight to stay alive in this new world as she turns to look at her friend. Lee Jihye meets her gaze bravely without faltering. Somewhere behind her, one of the weird blue screens pings cheerfully with a new alert that she chooses to ignore. To think, just barely two weeks ago, the two of them had hidden together under a playground slide castle to keep warm because a cold rain storm had caught them by surprise on the way from school. She had been contemplating what it might be like to confess the bubbling sincere feelings of what was likely love inside her chest and kiss her friend.

“Get up, Jihye. We have to get somewhere safe.” Na Bori holds out her hand toward the other girl. After a moment of hesitation that costs them valuable time, Lee Jihye takes her hand and they leave the room together to flee into the shadows of a dying world outside the walls of the school.
