Summary: The Prince will never forget his Swan

As he went to the ball, the prince’s head was full of the previous night, and how marvellous it had been, dancing with the swan – his swan.  His girlfriend meant nothing to him.  He’d never really been serious about her, simply having chosen her as the antithesis to the sort of lady his mother approved of.  And now she bore no comparison to the one who had shown him exactly who he was and what he needed.

He paid scant attention to the various princesses who were dancing, and none seemed unduly concerned at this lack of attention, having found themselves partners who were far more preferrable to him.

And then the Stranger walked in.  Here was his Swan in disguise, and yet he refused to acknowledge the prince.  Surely it was impossible he had forgotten all that they had experienced the previous night.  Suddenly, the sensation of loss was more than the prince could cope with and he acted as if in a dream – or a nightmare.

When he came round, he realised he was restricted, confined to a room, unable to explain what had provoked his sudden unreasonable behaviour.  Of course he would forgive the Swan, he would always forgive him, but he would never be forgotten.

And then the Swan came to him, and the prince knew that he had not been forgotten either.  There was nothing to forgive and he knew, of a surety, that by their deaths, their lives and their love would never be forgotten either.
