Lois held onto her glass of wine as she headed toward the light caused by the bonfire Clark had started to lure her in. Martha was already asleep, and Lois was happy about that. Lois had two glasses of wine besides this, but she had been sipping this one so long that it was warm. She wanted Clark to cool it off for her. Yet, Clark had come inside after he had gone out to get a little fresh air.
As soon as Lois came out to see the bonfire in the middle of the field that should have corn drying out for animal feed, she knew where Clark was. She had grabbed the boots she left at the farm since there were times they flew out there instead of driving. She didn't have a lot of clothes for the cooler weather, but that was okay because she could wear Clark's shirts. Which she was doing right at the moment.
"There you are," Lois said as she broke through the corn and found Clark lying on the ground. He had his hands under his head and looked up at the sky.
Lois looked up to see what Clark was looking at, and she could see the arcs of thunder headed their way.
"How long?"
"It won't hurt you." Clark held out his hand, and Lois stepped over the corn that was laid down into a net of weaves to feel a little springy. There was a soft blanket thrown down on the corn stalks. Clark helped her stay steady as she got onto the stalks and then held her glass of wine as she laid down with him.
"I know it won't hurt me. I don't fear anything when I'm around you, Clark. I think I've never seen how dangerous a storm can look when you see it coming like this. It seems to be coming for miles but moving so slowly." Lois got settled on her side, draped against his side.
Clark set the wine glass on his chest and gently blew on it until it frosted a little bit.
"Thanks," Lois said.
"Welcome. I know you like it cold, and it felt warm."
Lois kissed his cheek before she sat up a little to take a sip of the wine, and she loved the warmth it put in her. She settled back down to the stalks. The bonfire wasn't blocking the sky at all.
"Did you do this often growing up?"
"Yeah, a lot. I used to leave an area cleared out for me to do this in, but right now, that area is full, so I made one of these. Lighting struck and destroyed many crops here, so the corn was messed up. I picked what I could that was good and tossed it with the rest to be taken care of. I loved the storms that came at the end of fall so much. Seeing them rolling in like this. There is too much in the way in Metropolis."
"I can see why. It's beautiful and deadly. It seems like it's coming for us."
"It can seem that way. It's not. It's just doing what it does."
Thunder shook the ground a few seconds later, and Lois clung to Clark a little more.
"I've got you. I'll always have you."
"It's just so beautiful and scary."
"It's good you fear it. There are a lot of people who don't fear the things they don't understand when it comes to nature."
"What happens when it gets closer?"
"Well, I have something from my homeworld that I'll get out when it gets closer, but first, I want to feel the wind."
Lois knew she was getting even more frightened as the storm got closer. The wind picked up, and Lois could smell the rain on the wind. In Metropolis, the smell of the city was never overwhelmed by the rain like this. It was always just something that happened, and it was there, making the day horrible. Yet, this was something else. This felt like it was something so different.
"Ready?" Clark asked when the rain started to fall.
It was a light drizzle, but it was something that Lois didn't hate.
"No, let's get a little wetter." Lois sat up, and she finished off her wine.
Clark sat up as well and moved to settle in behind Lois, boxing her body in as the rain fell. Lois tipped her head back and let the rain fall on her face. It felt good. It felt clean, unlike the rain back home. There were parts of her that liked this. Parts of her wanted to stay here to live like that, but she knew it would kill her inside as well. She was a city girl inside.
"Now?" Clark asked when the thunder got deeper, and the lighting felt like it was too close.
"Yes, please."
"Okay. Stay right where you are. And don't worry about the smoke and anything else from the fire."
Lois wasn't sure what Clark meant until he tossed a device out of his hand. It landed, and it lit up before making a noise. A shield seemed to form above them; it shimmered and disappeared, stopping the water from hitting them. The area didn't get too much warmer either.
"What is that?"
"It's just a simple shield for the troops from Krypton. It's set to protect a four-man tent from extreme weather. Which is set for me at the moment. It was one of the training devices my father gave me when I was learning about my powers."
"It's great; it processes out the unneeded and pulls fresh air from outside. I don't know how it's done, but I love it."
"I can understand why. It's great." Lois laid her head on Clark's shoulder again and looked up at the rain coming down.
It was starting to get harder, and even the sound of the wind was coming through the shield. It was beautiful.
"I love you," Clark said.
"I love you." Lois turned her head to give Clark a kiss. They had exchanged I loved yous a long time ago, but it seemed so good each time they did it. It felt like the first time every single time.
Lois just wanted to be like this with him forever, but she knew it was impossible. They had their jobs to go home to, and he had the world to save. But here, when they were like this, Lois felt like they were the only two in the world.
"We need to do this more often," Lois said.
"We can. I don't mind flying us out here when we have the time, and there is a storm."
"Let's. It's going to be a little more dead over winter, right?"
"Well, not in South America or Africa, even Australia. There is a whole other half of the world we can settle in for a few hours. It's not like we can't have a bag packed just to be for that."
"Look at you being all willing to use your powers for personal gain."
Clark nipped at Lois' ear. "I do it all the time."
Lois laughed and pulled him around for a kiss. He'd do anything to make her happy. Just as she would as well.
