The apartment door burst open with such force that it rebounded from the wall and slammed shut, making Ryo wince, but as he turned to tell Bikky off, the boy came skidding into the kitchen, looking so excited that the rebuke died on his lips.

“Ryo! You’ll never guess what happened today at school!”

“I gather it was something good.” Despite the potential damage that had just been done to the door, the wall, or both, Ryo couldn’t keep from smiling. Bikky was thirteen now, all arms and legs, and restless energy fuelled by an insatiable appetite. He looked like he might explode from sheer excitement. “Well, aren’t you going to tell me?”

“We had a spelling bee in English, and some of the words were really hard, but out the whole class I was the only kid who got every single one correct!”

Ryo couldn’t blame Bikky for being so elated. When Ryo had taken the boy in three years ago his spelling had been abysmal; he’d come a long way since then.

“Congratulations, Biks! That’s an achievement to be proud of!”

“Thanks!” Bikky was grinning from ear to ear. “Um, sorry about the door.”

“You’re forgiven. This time.”

The End

I don't blame him at all either!! I've always enjoyed words, both the spelling and the usage thereof, but I DREADED spelling bees because of having to stand in front of everybody! I could get every word right, but I couldn't stand the idea (and still can't, tbh) of having all those eyes on me!

I was one of those nerds who even enjoyed diagraming sentences! ;)

I wouldn't be able to stand that either. At my school, the teacher called kids up one at a time in class and it was one on one. He'd read a word out and you had to spell it, or he'd point to one word, with all the rest covered, and you'd have to read it. I was one of the best in the class, he was always very pleased with me and gave me hard words. That was Mr Bevan. I really miss him; we stayed friends after I left the school, but he'd be ion his late 80s now, so he's probably gone.

*HUGS* I was ALWAYS one of those geeks who made tighter relationships by far with any teacher, even the ones I could barely stand, than any of my classmates! I caught Hell from the other students, but did have some pretty fantastic teachers over the years. I often wonder what happened to them, too.

He was my teacher my third year in junior school (ages 7-11), so I was maybe 9 or 10 at the time. After I moved up to grammar school (very different school system here than in the States, at least when I was a kid), I used to sometimes get home from school then walk down to the junior school to visit him. Even after I left school, I still saw him in town sometimes. He always recognised me and stopped for a chat. I miss him so much; he was a good friend, and an inspiration.

He's still crap at some subjects, but thanks to Ryo, his spelling is really good now.

Thank you!
