We had agreed the time to meet, but with the fog I was probably quarter of an hour late.  I hoped Holmes would wait; he seemed to have less problem traversing London in these conditions than I, but I was sure he would realise what had happened.

I stood around, stamping my feet occasionally for the fog was cold as well as damp.  After about ten minutes I thought I saw him approaching out of the fog, but then he faded again.  Cautiously I made my way towards him, thinking that the fog had thickened, but if anything, it was slightly lighter where I had thought I had seen him.

I turned, wondering whether we had passed each other by, but then, slightly unexpectedly, I caught a glimpse of Lestrade, and again made my way towards the inspector, only to have him apparently disappear as I watched.  To steady my nerves, I took a deep breath.  That was a mistake, for the foggy air only made me cough.

Then two soldiers passed by, and I knew my brain was playing tricks, for I had last seen them lying on the ground during the battle of Maiwand.  I controlled my panic, but by now I had turned round at least twice and had no idea which direction I was facing.

Finally, I caught sight of a vague light and headed towards it.  I almost collided with the light’s owner, who I realised was wearing the reassuring uniform of a police constable. 

I apologised and he said, “That’s all right, sir.  Not the first time it’s happened to me.  Take my arm and we’ll soon be there.”

I did as he suggested, and then a thought occurred to me.  “Where are we going?” I asked.

“To join the others.  Not long now.”
