As Mrs Hudson swept the landing, she reflected on the saying that ‘a new broom sweeps cleanest’.  No doubt that was true, and a new firm broom would be more effective at removing the dirt than the old battered one.  The one she was now holding had been a bargain in a recent sale, and an excellent buy, but still it didn’t quite have the same flexibility to get underneath the furniture which her old broom had had.

She turned her mind to Mrs Turner’s new tenants, and how they were adhering to all her rules.  If Mrs Hudson’s tenants followed even half hers, she would be very surprised.  Although there was still something to be said for having become accustomed to one another.

The front door banged open and shut, as her two tenants came in, talking loudly to each other.  It didn’t make much sense to Mrs Hudson, but that didn’t bother her.  There were other matters, which, as far as she was concerned, were of much greater importance.

She leaned over the banister and shouted down, “Mind you don’t leave muddy footmarks on the stairs.  I've just swept them.”

You just couldn’t do that with new tenants.
