Summary: Kitty doesn't trust Nathaniel when he's being glib.

Kitty catches him staring into empty space, presumably unaware of what he's doing. And that's unsettling because Nathaniel likes to keep everything under rigorous control. If he doesn't know, something's very wrong. It makes Kitty suspicious and more to the point, worried.

"What do you hope to find in there?" Kitty asks, after ten minutes of a spoon scraping the bottom of Nathaniel's ceramic bowl.

Nathaniel blinks slowly. He doesn't look at her or the soup bowl, although he does set down his spoon.

Kitty isn't expecting a sensible response, not when she knows he's about to bullshit her just because he can. When Nathaniel's lips quirk and he says, "sometimes there's an illustration," it demonstrates it perfectly.
