Summary: I want to stamp my feet and rail at fate



I want to stamp my feet and rail at fate
Hold heaven to account, abuse the stars,
Shout at the dead for dying on this date;
I want to shatter things with iron bars.
But what would be the point? T’would not ease grief,
Unmake obligation, could not disburse
To deeply disappointed hopes relief;
Such un-control would only make things worse.
Instead I shape this sonnet, pinning words
To paper with a stubborn, peeved restraint,
While selfish feelings, futile, dash like birds
Imprisoned fast within the form’s constraint;
   My tears may rage and wail and call alarm
   And yet remain where they may do no harm.
