Eddie was used to waking up to strange things. He had a child full of spunk, but fuzzy was not something he had woken up to before. He tried to remember what he had been doing when he went to sleep the night before. Buck wasn't with him; one of the nights, he insisted that Eddie and Chris needed time alone without him. Those times were becoming less, and Eddie hoped that with time, he would convince Buck that they never wanted time without him.
There was movement, and Eddie knew that not only was the fuzzy thing alive but there was also more than one of them because he felt the fuzz still on his face and then the one that was moving around by his hand that was near the pillow. Then something on his back moved, and there were sharp things.
Eddie didn't move his body because doing so might hurt whatever things were on him. He opened his eyes as the purring started. It was a kitten, more than one. He looked at the white fuzz in front of him and moved it out of his line of sight. He reached over for the one on the pillow and moved it as well. Then there was the one on his back.
Once those three were all on the pillow, Eddie carefully rolled to his side, and he looked around to find two more kittens who were playing at the other end of the bed. The mother cat was lying on the end of the bed, sleeping, it looked like. It was the same cat that Eddie had been feeding scraps for two weeks, without Buck or Chris knowing that he was doing it after he told them not to.
"Buck is going to kill me," Eddie said. He laid on his back and waited. It didn't take long for the kittens to come running up onto his chest. He hadn't known that she was a mother, or he would have been feeding her better. He felt horrible about how much he had told Buck and Chris that they couldn't feed her.
Eddie was a soft touch, and he knew that if they wanted to keep the cat, they would keep the cat. Now it looked like she had decided they were keeping her anyway.
"Okay, Princess, I hear you. I hear you. You guys are going into the bathroom while I go out and get things for you. I'll drop Chris off at Buck's, and then he can come back with Buck later." Eddie sat up, the kittens in his arms. "And here I am talking to you like you can understand me."
Eddie carried the kittens into the bathroom, and he snagged the pile of blankets with his free arm and dropped them into the tub before putting the kittens there. Princess trotted into the bathroom a few seconds later and jumped up in the tub. She laid down, and the kittens moved over to feed.
"Chris, I have a few errands, and they are boring. Do you want to go to Buck's for the morning?"
"Yeah," Chris said.
Getting confused about what was happening made Buck look at Eddie like he wanted to follow him to wherever he was going. He was just glad that Buck couldn't follow because of Chris.
The store had everything that he needed as well as the name of a good veterinarian for him to take them to when he could. Princess was going to get fixed as soon as he could make that happen. He wasn't sure what he would do to find homes for the kittens, but he would do it as soon as possible.
"Looks like you are new to this," the cashier said when Eddie brought the cart up.
"Yes, I am. A mother cat adopted me with her five kittens."
"Ah, I see. Yes, so sudden cat fatherhood. You have everything I think you are going to need. Do you have space for them?"
"Yes. I read online that I would need a lot of cat pans. One more than the cats that I have and that some mothers will teach the kittens to use it. I'll see how that goes. They are walking around a good bit, so they are older."
"Hmm, some might, and others might not. You'll have to see."
Eddie nodded and pulled out the rest of the items as they were scanned and put into bags. Eddie wasn't looking forward to setting things up, but at least the guest room would get some use since Buck had stopped using it when he spent the night. The pans would go around the bathrooms and one in the guest room for now.
When Eddie got home, he got everything set up for the kittens before heading to the bathroom to see what damage had been done. He turned on the fan as soon as he opened the door since there was waste in there now, thankfully, in a distant part of the tub from where the cat and kittens were.
"Yes, I know," Eddie said when Princess looked up at him with what amounted to a cat glare on her face.
"What is this?" Buck asked.
Eddie turned around to look at Buck and Chris standing there. He had been so focused on everything else that he hand not hard them.
"I texted you, and you didn't respond. So we got worried. I see why you were distracted. I thought that was the cat I was told I was not allowed to feed." Buck had a grin on his face.
"Yes, it was. I was feeding her, and today she trotted her butt inside with her kittens and left them in bed with me. How did they get in?"
"She's a cat; she gets to go where she wants to go and few and stop her."
"Can I see them, Dad?" Chris asked.
"You can see them, but don't touch them."
Chris carefully walked over and settled in at the side of the tub, looking down inside.
"So that's what you were doing? Getting everything ready for them?"
"Yes. I had no clue what to say. I was stupid for feeding her after I told you no, and I didn't even know about her kittens yet. So, I was also trying to figure out how to tell you that I did something stupid. I'll take her to get her fixed as soon as possible. I put the card for the vet on the kitchen table."
The mother cat got up and sniffed at Chris' fingers before rubbing up into his hand to force him to pet her.
Buck snagged the edge of Eddie's shirt and pulled them out of the bedroom and into the living room. "You know that you will have to keep the mother and at least one kitten, right?"
"I know. I'll let Chris pick the kitten, or the kitten pick him."
"So she really snuck into the house and laid them all on your bed while you were sleeping?"
"Yes." Eddie pulled Buck in and gave him a quick kiss. Buck didn't let him get too far away from him before pulling him back in for a longer kiss. It didn't go too far, but it was just enough to make sure they both knew how they felt about it.
"You were going to surprise us?" Buck asked.
"I was. I was going to wait and have it all set up before calling you. I didn't notice you had texted me. I woke up to fuzz in my face, and I knew that there was no way I wasn't going to just agree to keep them for now. We can work on finding homes for the four kittens when they are old enough."
"Yes," Eddie said. He wrapped his arms around Buck and felt like he just wanted this. "Don't leave again."
"Eddie," Buck said.
"No, just stay. Sell your loft and just stay with us. We can make it work. You don't need to go back there again."
Buck sighed, and he pressed a kiss to Eddie's temple before wrapping his arms around Eddie, holding him close.
"I don't know, Eddie. We've moved so fast on everything."
"We have a good basis, and you being here for a week when we were busy planning Abuela's party, we worked well."
"One week, I will stay here for a week just like I would be living here. One week, Eddie. We can try this for one week, and then I will decide."
Eddie nodded, loving the feel of their combined stubble rubbing on each other. It was rare that they could grow much of anything, and this would have to be shaved off soon, but Eddie liked not shaving on their days off now, Buck's thighs looked so good with stubble burn on them.
"So, should we go and see what chaos Chris and the kittens have gotten into?" Buck asked a few minutes later.
"That sounds like a band name," Eddie said.
"Well, it was that or the fuzzy invaders."
Eddie laughed and kissed Buck again, turning that one a little deeper than the ones they had before. He wanted this, and he hoped that whatever hang-ups Buck had about them living together could be worked through. He wanted his family with him, and Buck had been family for a long time now. Buck just had to accept it.
