“I should get up,” Clef murmured into his pillow, failing to open his eyes. There was a strip of early-morning light falling across the bed, and he was warm, and comfortable, and not particularly awake yet.

The pillow – giggled.

He blinked his eyes open far enough to see Umi, curled next to him under the covers, awake enough to be grinning at him with an edge of mischief. “You could stay here,” she suggested, hand finding his under the covers and tangling their fingers together.

“I have meetings this morning.” He had meetings every morning, so he didn’t have to be very awake to know that.

“Do you really need to go to them?”

He started to insist that, yes, he was meant to be in attendance – but as he was (reluctantly) waking up, he was also becoming more aware that the three meetings he had this morning were all ones he sat in on – committees he wanted to keep track of, but nothing he actually had anything he wanted to say at.

…Now that the clerks had standardised how they were recording meetings, did he actually need to go to any of them?

The last few weeks had been hectic. He was worn through. If there was nothing urgent…

He was well over the hours he should work this quarter, by the rules he himself had helped set.

“If I don’t get up, I’m just going to fall asleep again,” he warned Umi, who just grinned harder, apparently hearing his capitulation in that one statement.

“That’s fine. I’ve not got classes today – so I’ll be here when you wake up, all rested.”

Clef snorted, but curled closer, and let himself, for once, relax back into sleep.
