The dance was bittersweet. A few days earlier, Buffy had been looking forward to her senior prom, arriving all pretty on the arm of her handsome older boyfriend. But then Angel had told her he’d be leaving Sunnydale, leaving her…

It had hurt so much, but at the same time she’d known he was right. There was no future for them, they could never be what they wanted to be to each other; the risk to Angel’s soul was too great, and it wasn’t fair to either of them to keep tormenting each other with a temptation they couldn’t afford to give in to. No matter how much they loved each other, they would ultimately be better off apart.

Buffy had made her peace with Angel leaving, and yet he’d shown up at the prom anyway, looking sexy and gorgeous in his tux, just so she could have this one perfect moment to hold on to once he was gone and she was alone. He knew how much this meant to her, and no matter how much it hurt them both, it was a memory she would cherish for the rest of her life.

She imagined she could feel the eyes of practically every girl in the room on them, jealous, wishing they could take her place in Angel’s arms, and maybe it was wrong of her to relish their envy, but it was just this once so what could it hurt?

Smiling up at Angel, she whispered, “Thank you,” and he smiled warmly back at her. She could see the love in his eyes, knew it was reflected in her own, and even though her heart ached, she was happy.

He would leave, but the love they shared would live on, no matter how many miles lay between them.
