Dearest Trixie,
You will have already heard about the tragedy and seen the newspaper cuttings. But they only give one side of the events. This is more of a personal reflection, highlighting the unsung bravery that I witnessed. My own role was minor, simply doing what I could, and perhaps adding a little weight when a voice of authority was needed. I can imagine you tutting at this, but sometimes it’s the quickest way to get things done, and speed was definitely of the essence.
Perhaps the most bizarre event was spending the night in Sister Frances’ bedroom. There was no impropriety – she shared with Nurse Corrigan instead. Both had done all they could to support the injured who were brought to Nonnatus House. Nurse Corrigan was considerably shocked after being involved in the crash, and yet she steadily applied herself in assisting others (I believe Sister Monica Joan may have spoken to her – despite appearances our elderly nun still has the ability to speak a word in season). Sister Frances, too, was much shaken after her day, but she worked unstintingly with the rest of them.
But I digress. Yes, I can now claim to have spent the night in a nun’s bedroom. On top of that I emerged from the bathroom the following morning to practically step into Nurse Crane’s arms. A surprise to both of us, as you can imagine. And Nurse Crane had already been into her own room, to find not only Nurse Robinson present, but also Cyril Robinson.
Nurse Robinson, as you can imagine, had been as hardworking as ever, despite the shock of the damage to their own flat when they were holding a meeting. And Cyril was so caring and supportive to all. I was honoured to work beside him.
Of course, Nurse Crane took charge and began organising. Having been away, and therefore missing the initial tragedy, she was able to provide the necessary support to the work which needed to be continued. I am sure she too was affected, but she put her own thoughts to one side so that the work of Nonnatus House would go on.
You will already have heard of the bravery of young Timothy Turner, and how his actions may well have saved the lives of his father and Sister Julienne. But Mrs Turner was just as brave, damping down her fears for her husband because there were others who were in urgent need of her help.
And Reggie was amazing. A never-ending supply of tea because, in his own words, ‘that was one thing I was good at’. None of which is to deny the bravery of the firemen and other rescue workers, but simply to recall those whose actions may not earn medals, yet who made so much difference to those involved.
Although I miss you dreadfully, I am still grateful you were not present. It was awful and the events of Saturday still dominate my thoughts. However, when I find them overwhelming, I remind myself of Nurse Crane’s expression at our encounter outside the bathroom and it makes me smile. Do not mention this to her under any circumstance!
With all my love,
Matthew
