To him she is as a perfect jewel, and he tells her so repeatedly. She laughs it away and bids him stop his nonsense, but he can see how much it pleases her. For Katrina he becomes a poet, albeit a poor one, and a lovestruck fool, even as a husband. He never minds, and that she indulges his romantic tendencies is part of why he loves her. Miss Mills may bemoan his turns of phrase but they are an artefact of his past, where a few well-chosen words would reward him with a smile more bright than any diamond.
