Summary: Mycroft Holmes has received an interesting recording

Mycroft Holmes listened to the recording which had appeared on his desk.  He frowned and listened again.  The voice was instantly recognisable.  What Mycroft couldn’t yet be sure of was whether the recording was genuine or whether it had been doctored.  That it had appeared on his desk without anyone knowing about it, implied the involvement of someone high up in the establishment and almost certainly within the security forces.

Mycroft picked up the phone and dialled a number.

The voice at the other end said, “Good morning.”

“Harry, I have just been listening to a very interesting recording,” Mycroft said.

“Indeed,” Harry Pearce replied.

“I thought I should make you aware of the fact.”

“Thank you for bringing it to my attention.”

“Not at all.”

Mycroft rang off, having received confirmation from Harry’s laconic replies that he had been the source.  The question was, what should he do about it?  His job was to serve the government.  But above that it was to serve his country.  He thought through the various possibilities and ramifications, twisting together his different ideas, before plucking out the one strand as being the best way forward.

He called Anthea into his office.  “Could you contact my tennis partner and suggest setting up a game of doubles for six tonight at the club?  I’m going to a meeting with the minister now, you can confirm the arrangements when I get back.”

Anthea nodded.  “Of course,” she said.

She What’sApped the message: ‘Doubles match tonight @ 6?’

In Section D Adam Carter looked at his phone and then leaned over to Lucas North, before saying, “We’re on.  6 o’clock.  Usual place.”
