Nor is it void like the vast reaches of space where lone particles may go centuries without encountering another, where even his freedom from the grasp of the earth below begins to falter. Space is too vast for him to touch.

 

Instead, closest analogy can find is an ocean. An ocean, but not the colourful, vibrant light-soaked edge where life teems.

No, he thinks of the depths where the water is heavy, heavier than lead, and starved of every shred of light and life, nothing but weight and darkness.
