The Hobbit: Fanfic: Strike One

  • Dec. 7th, 2021 at 12:51 PM

Title: Strike One
Fandom: The Hobbit
Rating: Teen & Up
Length: 180
Summary: Bilbo Baggins is something of a Took.

When one of his (many and varied) ancestors, Bandobras Took, struck off the head of the goblin king Golfimbul, he both brought to an end to the battle of Greenfields (more or less, but stories need such dramatics) and created a new sporting pastime for leisurely Hobbits across the expanse of the Shire, all in one fell swoop.

Bilbo has always been too much of a Baggins – too respectable and content to remain in the Shire, and Bag End in particular – to do too much emulating of his more martial ancestors. Present questing excepted, of course, with full blame for the adventuring assigned to Gandalf, as resident disturber of the peace and all round bad influence.

Perhaps there is something of Bandobras in him too, in the heat of battle. Sting is a small thing, compared to the blades and hammers and axes being used on the battlefield the slopes around Erebor have become - though it does its work against knees and tendons - but his kick is strong and sure enough to inflict a head injury or twelve.
