Summary: Tony and Abby are in for a shock when they catch a glimpse of the news

Tony was quietly working on the SFA paperwork on a rare afternoon without a hot case when his desk phone rang. Seeing the extension, he answered it with a cheerful, "Hey Abs."

"Turn on the TV. Right now," she commanded, tone flat.

Shifting the phone to his shoulder, Tony grabbed the remote for the plasma and flipped it over to ZNN. There, in shaky news chopper footage, was what appeared to be a miniature war zone on a very familiar freeway.

As the camera swerved through different areas of the disaster zone, Tony saw a SHIELD agent he knew on one side of the fray. Disturbingly, it looked like Nat and Rogers were on the other side.

"Holy shit," the probie muttered, as the rest of the bullpen gathered around the TV.

Tony couldn't spare a thought for his supposed teammate, and instead focused on Abby. "Recall?"

"I haven't gotten that order," she said, her worry clear in her voice.

"Have you heard anything?" Tony asked. Something big enough to involve Rogers happening in the middle of DC should have at least warranted a heads up.

"Nothing," Abby admitted.

"Have you called the Cavalry?" he murmured.

"No answer," Abby replied.

"Everest?" Their private nickname — a play on her last name — for Maria Hill, their handler.

"The same."

Tony worried at his lower lip. In the event of no contact from their superiors, they were supposed to act as NCIS personnel first, and SHIELD agents second. But none of their scenarios called for fellow SHIELD agents on opposite sides of the battle, or the involvement of an Avenger, let alone a disaster zone in their own backyard.

Speaking of backyard… Tony was painfully aware of the helicarriers docked just down the shore from the Navy Yard. His gut was churning, telling him that this tussle on the freeway wasn't the end of whatever storm was brewing.

"Try one more time, and then we go with Plan Holidays," Tony told her. As in 'Home for the—" and the materialization of some heretofore unknown family member who needed Tony and Abby at their deathbed.

"Got it," Abby agreed, then hung up.

As Tony dropped his phone back in the cradle, Gibbs caught his eye. "Anything?" he growled.

"She's got nothing more than what the whole world is seeing," Tony lied easily, gesturing at the TV in demonstration. "She's going to send out some feelers, but until we know there's sailors or marines involved…"

Unless they had jurisdiction or an "all hands on deck" was triggered by the SecNav, there was nothing any NCIS agent could do. And, without orders, there was nothing the two undercover SHIELD agents could do either.

But if Tony got any hint that they were needed — and those convenient helicarriers were making his gut churn that he'd already missed the hint — he scrap their operation in an instant. Compared to what the Avengers were likely to be involved with, corruption within NCIS was barely worth his time.

Later, Tony and Abby — who had enacted Plan Holidays and raced out of NCIS as soon as they were discretely able — would look back on the churning in his gut and be grateful that he had followed his instincts, or there could have been a lot more damage than some bullet holes around the helicarriers' launch room.
