From the first time he’d laid eyes on Dee Laytner, JJ had been smitten. How could anyone not be? Dee was perfection, JJ’s ideal man in every respect. He was tall and dark haired, with long legs, slim hips, broad shoulders, a sculpted body, and the face of a movie star. From that first meeting JJ had set his sights on winning Dee’s heart. No other man had stood a chance with him.

But Dee had proven impervious to JJ’s declarations of love, and now, ten years down the line, it was finally clear that the man of his dreams was never going to be his. Dee was with Ryo, and the two of them were obviously very happy together.

JJ couldn’t even say that he’d lost Dee, because Dee had never been his in the first place. He’d been laboring under the delusion that Dee was simply playing hard to get, that eventually he’d come around and realise that he and JJ were destined to be together. He’d been wrong.

‘How could I have been so blind?’

That was a good question, but the answer was irrelevant. A more important question was how JJ was supposed to get over the love of his life. He couldn’t simply turn love on and off at will. People weren’t made that way.

He’d lost track of Dee after they’d graduated, something JJ now realised had been intentional on Dee’s part. During the time between graduation and tracking his heart’s desire down to New York’s 27th Precinct, JJ had dated other men off and on, but he’d never been serious about any of them because his heart already belonged to Dee. His other lovers had been nothing more than placeholders, something he felt guilty about now. He hadn’t been fair to them, had treated them worse than Dee had treated him.

‘I’ve wasted ten years chasing an illusion, but that’s over now. I have to move on.’

That was easier said than done. It hurt to look back and see what a fool he’d been. Loving someone didn’t mean they had to love you back, love couldn’t be forced. There’d be far less heartbreak in the world if it could.

‘There’s someone out there for me somewhere, someone who’ll love me the way I want to be loved. I just have to find him.’

Starting over would be hard, but he’d do it.

The End
