Dee and Ryo had plans for their day off. Bikky was away at camp, and Dee had slept over the night before, so instead of having a lazy lie-in as they usually would have, they got up early. The sooner they were on the road the better; the last thing they needed was to get stuck in rush-hour traffic.

The sun was still barely above the horizon by the time everything they’d need for their picnic was loaded into Dee’s car. Ryo ticked off items on the checklist in his head, making sure they hadn’t forgotten anything important: the big plaid blanket, the cooler full of drinks, the picnic basket with its cutlery, plates, and cups, the thermos flasks of coffee, sunscreen and insect repellent, a small first aid kit in case of accidents, even a frisbee for a bit of fun and exercise. They were set.

Fifteen minutes into the journey, Ryo, who’d been half dozing in the passenger seat, suddenly sat up straight.

“Dee, we have to go back!”

“What? Why? Did ya leave the stove on?”

“No, it’s worse than that! I forgot to put our lunch in the picnic basket, it’s still in the refrigerator!”

“Airhead!”
