Days like this, Ryo was tempted to wonder if he was jinxed; had he broken a mirror without realising, or not touched wood when he should have? He wasn’t normally a superstitious man, but perhaps some superstitions held a grain of truth. Or maybe it was just that some days he was terminally clumsy, probably through not getting enough sleep.

Half an hour ago he’d been completely engrossed in paperwork, typing on his computer keyboard with one hand while drinking coffee, hoping the caffeine would give him a badly needed energy boost. He must have zoned out for a minute, because when one of the civilian clerks dropped the files he’d asked for on the end of his desk, it had startled him so badly he’d spilled his coffee in his lap. Fortunately, it had only been lukewarm, so he hadn’t scalded himself, but the incident had necessitated a trip to the locker room to change into the spare pants he kept at the precinct for emergencies. At least it had woken him up.

Now though…

Sidestepping around Dee, who’d been openly admiring the way that spare pair of pants clung to his lover’s ass, Ryo had bumped his desk, knocking one of the file folders onto the floor, and as he’d stooped to retrieve it, he’d felt something give.

“Shit!” Ryo didn’t usually swear like that either, but sometimes it was justified.

“What? Did ya put your back out?” Dee teased.

“No, I just split my pants, and I don’t have another spare pair!” Ryo straightened up, tossing the rescued folder on top of the others, and slapped both hands over the seat of his pants. “Now what do I do?” He and Dee still had another two hours of their shift, but now he had one pair of pants soaked with coffee and the other with a split down the back.

Dee wasn’t much help; he was too busy laughing at his lover’s misfortune. “I might haveta investigate that tear later.”

“It’s not funny, Dee!”

“It is from where I’m standin’! Look, maybe if ya just stay at your desk no one will notice.”

Ryo sidled to his chair and sat down. “And how likely is it that I can stay right here for the rest of our shift? What if we have to visit a crime scene?”

“Relax. Hopefully by then your other pair will be dry.”

The End
