Summary: Occasionally, Huan would indulge in puppy-hood. Nerdanel, for Reasons, declared that Feanor would be puppy-Huan's minder.


Occasionally, Huan would indulge in puppy-hood. Most often, this would occur when Celegorm was away, doing a stint of public service or specific reparation, where Huan, Returned himself, was not to assist. Grown Huan was perfectly capable of looking after himself. Puppy Huan needed a minder.

Nerdanel had decided that that minder would be Feanor. For Reasons. Feanor did not argue, even though he did wonder a bit at the entire idea. He did not recall Huan being a puppy when he arrived in the household at Tyelcormo's heels all those ages ago.

(Nerdanel had come to the conclusion early in their relationship that Feanor had not had much opportunity for unstructured play as a young child, not as she had had. It delighted her to see him so free now: another reason to be glad Huan had chosen to return to them.)

Thus there would be romping on the lawn, panting and laughing and tumbling into (in summer) one or another of the ponds, pools and fountains that graced the grounds, or (in winter) snowbanks and drifts, and skitter-skating across such pools and ponds as were sufficiently frozen to hold up under such play, getting water everywhere in either case; the throwing and catching of flying disks (Huan was quite good at flinging the things, as long as he remembered to be carefull with his teeth), the investigation of Interesting Smells and other like activities. Such a day invariably ended with them both soundly asleep, Feanor sprawled on whatever piece of furniture -- or architectural, horticultural, geographical feature -- he subsided upon, and Huan firmly ensconced on top of him.

Nerdanel would smile on seeing them, and shoo everyone else away from disturbing them. Eventually, the sculpture dubbed The Sleepers gained considerable renown. Few people knew who the ellon actually was.
