Buffy was about ready to tear her hair out in frustration. She’d thought deciding which college to attend would be the end of it, UCLA Sunnydale being the only choice she reasonably could make since she could hardly commute to carry out her duties as the Slayer. But no, there was so much more to decide, such as which courses she wanted to take.

How on earth was she supposed to make up her mind when there was so much to choose from? What would prove useful to her when she graduated, assuming she survived that long? What would be interesting enough to spend countless hours studying? To make matters worse, various classes clashed with others, and since she couldn’t be in two places at once, that left her trying to judge their respective merits, sight unseen. It was torture!

Naturally, Willow had already made her decisions, and probably had everything indexed and color coded. There were times Buffy envied her friend’s amazing organisational skills.

“How’s it going?” her mom asked, bringing her a tall, frosty glass of homemade lemonade.

“I think my head’s about to explode.” Buffy sipped her drink. “Yum, just what I needed. Thanks, mom.”

“You’re welcome, anything to help my daughter prepare for college.”

“But is anyone ever REALLY prepared for college? There’s so much to sort out, and how am I supposed to know now what I’ll want to do when I leave college, assuming I manage to graduate, which at this point, I’m not even sure I can get through enrolment. I’m starting to think having my head explode might not be such a bad thing. It would save me from drowning in too many choices.”

“Welcome to adulthood, where everything is about choices and decisions.”

“Can’t I just go back to high school?”

The End

Too much choice can be paralysing, and suddenly what you're leaving behind seems safe and cosy, even if you spent most of your teenage years hating it!

Thank you!

The juxtaposition of Buffy having these typical emerging adulthood difficulties coupled with that knowledge that, as a slayer, she may not live well into her next decade is powerful stuff.

Thank you. It's tough enough for ordinary teenagers making the transition to adulthood. Being the Slayer adds a whole other level of anxiety.
