Midnight on a school night. By now, most kids Buffy’s age would be home in bed, and here she was, strolling through a cemetery of all places. Such was the life of a Slayer.

Sometimes, Buffy found herself wishing she could be an ordinary teenager, be the girl she’d been back in L.A., before her first Watcher had introduced himself, only… Looking back, she’d been so horribly shallow. She’d been like… Cordelia!

Yeesh, no, she liked herself better the way she was now, even with all the late-night vampire hunting and messy demon slayage. It was gross, and she ruined so many clothes from ick that just would not come out, no matter how hard she scrubbed. Couldn’t the Watcher’s Council do something useful and invent a detergent that worked on demon stains? Maybe she’d talk to Giles about that tomorrow.

Oh, wait, it was already tomorrow. Well, later today then.

She idly twirled her stake, tossing it up and catching it, sighing again. Patrol could be unbelievably boring; she should probably call it a night. Vampires might be creatures that revelled in the hours of darkness, but even they usually headed home to their crypts or wherever when all their potential victims had gone home hours ago.

Maybe she’d swing by a couple of other cemeteries on her way home, just on the off chance, but there hadn’t been any burials over the last couple of days so the chances of a vampire rising from its grave were non-existent. The whole patrol had been a gigantic waste of time, when she could’ve been out with her friends, or home studying, and maybe getting an early night for once. For Buffy, an early night meant the early hours of the morning.

Good thing Slayers didn’t need a lot of sleep.

The End

I really like this glimpse into the mundane, which must make up more of Buffy’s evenings of slaying than not. I also enjoy her inner dialogue and how it shows her maturity and growth, but also reminds us that she’s very much a teenager.

Thank you!

Buffy has grown up since L.A. but she still has some way to go, she's in that awkward not-quite-an-adult zone, trying to juggle responsibility with teenage life, but she's doing okay, just wishing there was some way to predict whether or not she needs to patrol on any given night. She'd like to have a life...

Glad you enjoyed this!
