Even after she’d started to have some doubts about Ford, Buffy would never have expected this. He’s changed in ways she never could have imagined. Okay, maybe he has his reasons, it sucks that he’s dying, but what right does that give him to sacrifice her and a bunch of innocent, misguided vampire wannabes just in the hopes of becoming a vampire himself? That won’t extend his life, it’ll just damn his human soul, and she’s tried to explain that, but he just doesn’t want to hear.

So here they are now, locked in this basement, bomb shelter, whatever the hell it used to be, waiting for Spike and his crew to arrive. There’s no escape for any of them, they’re sitting ducks, lambs led to the slaughter, all those tired old cliches.

Well, whatever Ford expects to happen when the vampires arrive, Buffy intends to make sure it doesn’t. Ford himself she could care less about, but he doesn’t want her help or her protection. The others don’t know it yet, but they need her. There’s nothing romantic about the monsters that’re coming, and being changed is no blessing.

She’ll save them if it’s the last thing she does.
