The morning after victory is not unlike the morning after retreat. (The morning after defeat is different, though not so different as one might expect or hope.) For many, too many, (even one too many), there is no morning after. No picking up the pieces, binding wounds, repairing arms and armor, weaving through the encampment bearing water, food, and news: who yet lives, who has succumbed, whose fate is yet unknown, Which unit or household has the best mead, which the best fire; Of what deeds and deaths the bards already sing. What seeds of legend are already being told.
