What is this day, this end-point, half-point, pivot of the year
Set down in grids and calendars, in vain attempt to steer
Time by man's desire and decree, harness seasons, days
In fixed array: a tension set between the solar rays
And lunar tides, Midsummer past and Lughnasa ahead
No rhyme but counter's reason, half the paper year now fled
An arbitrary offset of the wheel, made by decree
In Numbers by consent of clocks, not stone or star or tree
Uneven months untethered to the changing moon, fixed sun
Rough the year careens, off-balance, as time doth steady run
