Summary: Communication can be difficult for June Dillon

June Dillon looked round the large room rather nervously, it had been a few years since she had last entered, and while she had once walked in quite confidently, something within in her caused her to hold back slightly.  She had assured Kevin, her husband, that she would be fine, but now she missed his presence and his assistance.

June took a deep breath, and walked towards the desk.  She didn’t recognise either of the midwives she could see, and she felt herself starting to panic.  She held out her card to the woman at the desk, who had just started to say something when she felt a touch on her arm and turned to see the smiling face of Nurse Franklin.

“I’ll look after Mrs Dillon for now, Miss Higgins,” Trixie said.  “I think Dr Turner mentioned she would be coming.”

“Indeed he did,” Miss Higgins replied. She smiled at June and waved her arm to indicate a vacant seat.

June waited patiently for her turn, waving back at a couple of the other mothers who waved to her in recognition.  After a while Nurse Franklin came over and beckoned her to join come into one of the cubicles where Dr Turner joined them.  She was doing her best to co-operate as the doctor examined her when she saw him turn, and then Kevin came in to join them.

She asked him how he’d known where she was and watched as he moved his fingers to reply.

“One of the other mothers recognised me and told me you were in here.”

“I’m glad you’re here.  Could you explain to your wife that both I and Nurse Franklin have examined her, and we think she is expecting twins,” Dr Turner said.

“What?”  Kevin looked shocked and June began to worry.

Then, as his fingers conveyed the message, she shook her head and turning to Trixie held up two fingers, pointing to each in turn.  Trixie smiled and repeated the gesture.  June signed a reply to Kevin.

“June says ‘Double trouble’,” Kevin relayed.

Dr Turner laughed.  “Thank you for explaining it to her.  We weren’t sure how we’d manage that one.”
