Summary: Fuel on the fire


Fuel on the fire, smoke on the wind -- an old, old refrain. Old as lightning, as sparks from rockfalls finding tinder, light lensed in crystal -- quartz or diamond, focused translucent stones, fire from the sky or erupting from the earth, friction made twixt one thing and another, making flame. And flame makes smoke. Dragon-fire, grass-fire, forest fire, all came befor the forge or hearth, kiln or cooking-fire. But smoke is a warning as well as a weapon. The survivors of the Bragollach heeded it well, and were lucky besides. But not all fire is physical, not all smoke is seen.
