Mrs Wallace sat at the back of the bus, alternating between fuming and despairing.  She had thought she’d found somewhere the church could meet.  It hadn’t sounded perfect, being realistic they couldn’t afford perfect, but it would have worked.  When she’d spoken to the owner of the property on the telephone, he had given her the impression that it was available, and all that he needed was her signature on the paperwork, plus a deposit.  She’d even had the cheque in her handbag ready to give to him.

But, as soon as they’d met, he’d told her the place had unexpectedly been let.  He hadn’t even bothered to apologise.  She’d known he was lying, and the advertisement would be in the newspaper again the following week, but there was nothing she could do about it except sit fuming in the bus.

Which was why when Lucille Anderson came to her with her suggestion, she’d been sceptical.  She knew Fred Buckle by sight, and he seemed cheerful and friendly.  But that was before they’d asked to rent his flat.  Nevertheless, she’d gone along to meet him.

Fred had shown them the flat, and when she’d stated they would not only be holding church services there, but they wished Cyril Robinson, who acted as their pastor, to live there, he hadn’t batted an eye.  In fact, he’d seen very pleased at the idea.  He had blinked a bit when she’d said they’d need his help to get the piano upstairs, but they could probably manage that without his help anyway.

Which all went to prove that the Good Lord had known both they and Mr Robinson needed a roof over their heads and had provided the perfect solution in His own timing.  Sometimes it was good to be reminded about such things.
